April 18 2008 South Africa Three die after great white shark-diving boat capsizes off South Africa  Two men from the United States and one from Norway died after the boat they were in capsized near Gansbaai on Sunday. Chairperson of the Great White Shark Protection Foundation, Mariette Hopley, said the shark-cage diving boat had just anchored when a freak wave capsized the vessel.  Ten people on board were clients of Great White Shark Projects. Another nine were crew and staff members. Other boats in the area went to help. One person swept off the boat was trapped underneath the hull and had to be retrieved by divers who took the man to the mainland where paramedics managed to get a faint pulse but were unable to revive him. He was certified dead. The other two men were found drowned at sea while the rest of the people on board are in a stable condition.  USA Georgia Aquarium is to offer a swim with whale sharks The Georgia Aquarium is offering a guided eco-tour to Mexico that will allow visitors to swim with whale sharks in the wild and learn more about the creatures.   The big fish tank is trying an annual whale shark experience vacation that will have participants diving with the whale sharks at the aquarium one day and swimming with them in Mexico the next. The vacation, which is planned for August 7-12, begins with a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium. April 30 2008 Taiwan Taiwanese divers found alive  Eight Taiwanese scuba divers have been rescued nearly 48 hours after going missing.  In an amazing feat of endurance, one of them managed to swim ashore and told rescuers where they could find the others. Five were lifted from the sea by helicopters at dawn Monday and the last two missing divers were found later. After failing to be rescued, the group's instructor Ding Bo-ling set off on a more than 10-hour swim for shore, finally reaching land before midnight Sunday at Taimali, 76 kilometres (47 miles) further north.  The remaining divers held hands to avoid being separated.  Full story...

April 28, 2008 Thailand Pufferfish Thai funeral dish poisons guestsMore than 140 mourners at a funeral in northern Thailand are reported to have been taken ill after eating a dish that appears to have contained pufferfish.  The mourners started vomiting and complained of numb tongues and shortness of breath and were rushed to hospital after being served soup containing fish balls bought at a local market in Nan province, the Bangkok Post reports.  Doctors said the symptoms were consistent with pufferfish poisoning, which can be fatal.  The fish contains a poison known as Tetrodotoxin, which paralyses the diner's muscles. There is no known antidote.  The fish is prized as a delicacy in Japan - known as fugu - and chefs are specially trained to prepare it safely. Pacific Bikini Atoll tourism director unsure of Air Marshall Islands The tourism director for Bikini Atoll says he is sceptical about the reliability of the Air Marshall Islands despite its services resuming after mechanical faults grounded two of its aircraft. The airline conducted a successful test flight of its 34-seat Dash-8 aircraft after its services were halted more than six months ago. Air Marshall Islands is now under pressure to get its other aircraft, a 19-seat German-made Dornier 228, back into service. But the manager of the Bikini Atoll scuba diving operation Jack Niedenthal says he’s sceptical because his company’s reputation has taken a hit since the grounding of the aeroplanes. He says his company relies on aeroplanes to transport customers. “There’s no other way to do this kind of business,” said Niedenthal. “You have to understand that in Bikini, the operation we have up there, we do relatively deep diving. And the reason why you need an airplane is so that you can do medivacs if somebody gets hurt. You have to be able to have a plane to get up there and get the person off.”   Full story...

April 29, 2008 Taiwan Divers missing  An extensive search and rescue effort continues for eight scuba divers missing in waters off Kenting National Park since Saturday. Four helicopters from an airborne police unit, six coastguard patrol boats, twenty fishing boats and several tourist vessels scoured waters near Chihsingyen (Seven Star Rock), a popular diving spot. Coast guard official Hsu Yung-kang said the coastguard was focusing on waters off Taitung County in particular, because the strong current might have carried the missing divers to the northeast.  The seven divers - five men, two women  and their diving guide- were reported missing while scuba diving in waters near Chihsingyen, 22km southwest of Kenting, Pingtung County. Premier Chang Chun-hsiung has ordered an all-out effort to find the missing divers.    Full story...
